Highlights from this day
  • ferritin_fay — i freeze aliquots and have had them test fine afterwards. others here would not do it and i understand why 21:11
  • ferritin_fay — sorry to jump in a liquid cold pack tells you it was above freezing, not that your vial cooked 22:50
  • typosquat_tay — a cooler with two gel packs held under eight degrees for eleven hours on a drive 22:53

unopened and in-use in the same place is fine. just keep the in-use one where you can reach it

reconstituted solution is the fragile part. that is where the cold chain actually earns its keep

how cold is too cold, can it actually freeze in a normal fridge

VO

lyophilised powder is genuinely robust. a warm transit is far less likely to matter than people fear

two to eight degrees. most domestic fridge doors are not in that range and people do not check

P2

coming back after 3 months, is the pinned storage table still current

FF

hotel minibars are frequently not cold enough. i take a thermometer, which is ridiculous and also correct

follow up do i need to worry about light exposure or is that overthinking

for the archive for flying, hand luggage every time. the hold is not temperature controlled the way people assume

freeze thaw cycling is the risk, not one freeze. that is my read of it anyway

i left it out overnight by accident, bin it or use it

update on the earlier thing i have never had a lyophilised vial fail after a warm transit and i have had some bad ones
a few hours at room temperature is almost certainly nothing. a week is a different conversation

test it

i would bin it

is a five pound fridge thermometer actually worth it

VO

light exposure matters much less than temperature for these. i still keep them in the carton, ymmv

NP

i left a reconstituted vial out overnight once, sent it for testing out of curiosity, it came back fine

NP

the door swings four or five degrees every time somebody opens it. the back barely moves, ymmv

solution is not

VO

buy a thermometer. mine reads 4 on the door and two degrees lower at the back, thats just me

update from 10 months ago: replaced the fridge, temperature is stable, no more anxiety
